Forty miles of prime blonde sands make up Florida’s Palm Beaches. With a huge range of activities, from high-octane water sports to perennial sunbathing and excellent entertainment facilities, there’s little need to venture further afield. However, for those with a taste for something different, Florida never disappoints. Venture into the alligator swamps of the Everglades or see in the late hours with Miami’s cool set. Here are The Chesterfield Palm Beach’s best day trips.
Best for fishing: Lake Okeechobee
Known as Florida’s inland sea, Lake Okeechobee is the largest saltwater lake in the state—it goes without saying that it’s a popular haven for anglers. Less than an hour’s drive from The Chesterfield, drift out across the glassy surface and, if you’re lucky, reel in a largemouth bass. There’s a thriving and sustainable fish population here, so all are welcome to throw out a line.
Best for Cuban culture: Miami
The biggest and busiest metropolis in the region, Miami jives to its own beat. No visit to the city is complete without a sip of strong Cuban coffee in Little Havana to the tune of Spanish guitar strums. As night falls, seek out the heady pulse of South Beach and the glitz of Collins Avenue for late-night revelling.
Best for families: Walt Disney World
A day trip from Palm Beach to Walt Disney World means an early wake-up call. The theme park is a two and a half-hour drive away, and it’s a must-visit for families with children. Visitors can snap a ubiquitous selfie with their favourite Disney princess before screaming through the air on a white-knuckle rollercoaster. Don’t leave before the afternoon Fantasy Parade, featuring all the big names.
Best for its art scene: Boca Raton
Whether it’s a leisurely stroll around a local craft market, an art-house movie in an independent cinema or a sell-out concert at Mizner Park Amphitheatre, there’s plenty to entertain culture buffs in Boca Raton. Find the hub of all the action at Boca Raton Museum of Art, where thought-provoking exhibitions and a rotating programme of events and workshops make for a memorable visit.
Best for getting back to nature: Everglades National Park
Sprawled across the south of Florida is one of the state’s most compelling excursions: the Everglades National Park. Glide across dark waters on a guided airboat tour – a safe way to spot alligators nosing through the mangroves – or cycle the park’s protected trails to take in the wilderness at your own pace.
Best for Brazilian culture: Fort Lauderdale
A day trip from Palm Beach to the ‘Venice of the United States’, as Fort Lauderdale is fondly known as, is all about laid-back gondola rides through a tight-knit web of canals and shopping the chic Las Olas Boulevard. This smart avenue is lined with sidewalk cafés, pretty boutiques and art galleries. After sundowners, tuck into a juicy steak in one of Fort Lauderdale’s buzzing Brazilian restaurants to the sounds of live samba music.
